Can you believe it’s Memorial Day weekend already? The month seemed to fly past for us (mostly due to funerals, weddings, and minimoons). We always look forward to Memorial Day weekend because we like to relax and throw a BBQ.
We’ve been slowly working on our BBQ menu and debating making a giant Jenga for the backyard. There is just something about having people over for burgers that we just love. So in honor of this Memorial Day, I give you today’s Five on Friday selected for your festivities.
To get started, follow some of these tips for planning a get together. They sound simple but they are easy to forget or take for granted.
We love the watermelon drink dispenser and whenever we make it, everyone else does too! It might seem complicated but the hardest part is scraping all of the watermelon guts out. I recommend using last year’s pumpkin carving kit to scoop out the guts. Since drafting the original post, we have a one modification—get two rubber gaskets (one for the front and one for inside). They help prevent leakage.
Who doesn’t love a margarita? Want to make it better? Add a beer. You can even use a flavored (like blueberry) to make the margarita even tastier. For an added effect, serve with beer bottle sticking out of margarita glass.
4. Strawberry Shortcake Grillers
We love grilling fruit during the summer months. This is a different way of having strawberry shortcake, you grill it! Cut it up, place on skewers, and grill. Impress your guests with an interesting take on a classic dessert.
It seems that at our BBQ/friends BBQ’s, the night isn’t complete without playing cornhole or bocceball. This site has instruction for building your own cornhole. Or you can be lazy like us and get it at Walmart.
Many of us forget the real reason behind Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This holiday please consider donating to Green Beans Coffee Cup of Joe Program. Since early 2009, Cup Of Joe For A Joe has been a wonderful way for Americans everywhere to say thanks to our Troops and let them know they’re appreciated through the simple act of buying a cup of freshly brewed coffee, writing a personal letter of encouragement to go with it and having both delivered into the hands of a Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine or Coast Guardsman who is serving far from home.
